Sharing More Hope on the Journey

The Journey continues, now more than ever

As we continue to watch the ongoing events in our communities, our country, and throughout the world, we search for Hope when we feel a sense of hopelessness or even helplessness. Whether it's the uncertainty of separation from loved ones and life in detention centers; the breakdown and disintegration of family units as a result of poverty and social injustice; or longing for safety and security amid a pandemic; many of us feel a need to respond to what is happening before our very eyes.

In 2018, music producer, composer, and musician Bobby Fisher, along with other musicians, and a Catholic parish, looked for ways to make a difference; but what could a small group of individuals do? What do musicians do? They make music! Through the joint efforts of Bobby Fisher, Bellarmine Chapel, and The Pierson-Young-Project, a local musical event, was born out of a global campaign initiated by Pope Francis in 2017. https:www.usccb.org/news/2017/17-.org

"Share the Journey; a Concert for Compassion" was created in 2018 as a benefit concert featuring local music artists and performers invited to donate their talents and resources to raise money for The Kino Border Initiative and the League of United Latin American Citizens. Both organizations work extensively to serve and assist refugees, detainees, and immigrant families.

Thanks to the generosity and support from the performers, those who attended, and donors, the first Share the Journey Concert was a huge success, raising over $4,000.

Now for the 3rd year, the music community will once again come together to make a difference through the power of music. Various music genres such as folk, contemporary Christian, gospel, indie, etc. will perform, and monies raised through ticket sales, artist's merchandise sales, and donations.
We are delighted to announce that this year the excellent organization, Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio, will be included as a beneficiary of the proceeds from this event.
We thank you for the last two years of success, and we look forward to performing for you again!!!

Share the Journey 2020; a Concert for Compassion will take place on Friday, October 16, 7:00 pm-9:00 pm at the beautiful Bellarmine Chapel located on the campus of Xavier University, Cincinnati.

A Musician Looks at the Choice between Hope and Hopelessness

One of my proudest accomplishments as a songwriter & performer was to write and perform a song called "Hope is Alive."
I have a few thoughts about what that message means to me as a person who wrote a song about Hope.

The phrase Hope is alive is not an original thought by me. In some ways, it has become almost commonplace. Many of us have heard Rev. Jessie Jackson using the phrase keep Hope alive for years, especially in his run for the white house. It has been the theme and message of other songwriters, speechwriters, sermons, productions, etc. However, I want to talk about what it means in the context of my universe.

I began taking a hard look at what it means to be an advocate of the hope message amid an environment, culture, and mindset of hopelessness. Is it naïve to continue the hope campaign when everything looks so bleak? Am I wearing rose-colored glasses and just not seeing what everybody else sees? Is it foolish to hope? But on the other hand, if I don't have hope, then what do I have?

If I don't have hope, then what do I have? What I have is what I see and hear daily from those who have chosen to live without Hope or at least very little of it. The adverse effects of bitterness, resentment, a disregard for humanity, can be seen daily, to name a few.

My relationship with those I love, and those around me would suffer. Most importantly, without Hope, my relationship with God would take a severe hit; My faith takes a hit. I also realized was that I have to be a willing participant in the Hope, not just for me but for others.

What does that mean? If I am not part of the Hope, I'm part of the hopelessness. I have a choice between Hope and hopelessness; it is my choice to make, and no one can take it from me.

That's a dangerous proposition because the choice I make determines how I will live my life and how I will treat others as I travel on this life journey. Choosing hopelessness does not depend upon a group, an idea, a concept, a person, a religion, or even a political party. The opportunity for Hope will demand action on my part; in my neighborhood, in my family, in my daily dealings with people. It may mean activism, but it will undoubtedly mean compassion without bitterness, judgment, or prejudice. It means that I must seek the more profound truth, not the usual talking points.

Rev Jackson reminds us to keep Hope alive, but Hope keeps us alive.
What is my conclusion? I'll choose the Hope; it's my better option!

Greg Pierson
