PGM 17 - Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter 2020
DOS FRIDAS (SCR/DIR Ishtar Yasin, COSTA RICA, 2019, color, 92:00. Drama). This feature comes fresh off a world festival circuit in almost a dozen countries, picking up awards and accolades along the way. It is the story of the Costa Rican nurse who took care of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo for the last years of her life. Director Ishtar Yasin is a frequent collaborator with Bronx World Film, which has in the past screened her first feature film, El camino, and the short film Sed, by Aldo Gutiérrez Cortés. THUMBELINA AND THE OGRE (SCR/DIR Cécile Robineau, FRANCE, 2018, color, 08:00. Animation) An ogre lives alone in a huge garden, where he spends his time eating and gardening. One day, he meets a tiny woman who falls from a barn-swallow. Their peculiar friendship is put to the test because of their true nature. Thumbelina wants to travel again, while the ogres appetite awakens. (In French, with English subtitles. (US premiere.)
PAVEMENTS (SCR/DIR Nicola Ragone, ITALY, 2016, color, 04:00. Silent.) The awakening of Petru, a Romanian tramp in Italy, sleeping along a sidewalk of the Tiber. The face of a man consumed by tragic events and that of a woman, in the glass of an empty bottle, who bends down to offer alms. Their gaze ignites a mysterious spell of paroxysms: the swooning of desire and the bitterness of two very different destinies. (US Premiere)
