Rachel Barton Pine, violin: American Traditions
Known for her "bravura technique and soulful musicianship" (New York Times), Rachel Barton Pine has appeared as soloist with many of the worlds most prestigious ensembles, including the Chicago and Vienna Symphonies, Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, and Camerata Salzburg. She holds top prizes from the J.S. Bach, Queen Elisabeth, Paganini, Kreisler, Szigeti, and Montreal international competitions.

Rachel Barton Pine presents a classical program inspired by American roots music. Beginning with the European dance music of early immigrants, a Bach Partita and a traditional Scottish medley, the sound transforms into a uniquely American style thanks to the influence of African-American music-making.

Four of the featured composers are celebrated fiddlers: Mark O'Connor, Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, and David Wallace. Each has composed infectious concert music blending classical and American traditional music, blurring the line between the violin and the fiddle.

Black composers from America and Europe are also front and center: Noel da Costa, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, and Daniel Bernard Roumain. The program ends with a famous and thrilling set of Paganini-style virtuoso variations on the quintessentially American tune Yankee Doodle.

The performance is in conjunction with the PERFECT HARMONY: THE MUSICAL ART & LIFE OF WILLIAM SIDNEY MOUNT exhibition at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown.

This performance is sponsored by WAMC Northeast Public Radio.

Rachel Barton Pine's performance is an indoor, seated event.

About the Festival:

Founded in 1999, the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival has been bringing world-class chamber music performances to the Cooperstown area for 20 years. The festival has featured performances by the Tokyo String Quartet, the American String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Kurt Elling, Tim Fain, Bill Charlap, Hilary Kole, Simone Dinnerstein, Mark O'Connor, the Sonia Olla Flamenco Dance Company, and many more.

Celebrated graphic artist Milton Glaser (best known for the I Heart NY campaign) has created a series of 18 posters for the Festival featuring violins and cows, a nod to Cooperstown's rural character. Performance Today host Fred Child has said, "Not only do they do interesting concerts, they have great posters."

The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
