Finances and Budgeting in Nonprofit Organizations -- including internal controls and managing fraud -- March 21, 2019
This workshop ranges in difficulty from elementary to intermediate level, and all of it is suitable for attendees who have minimal technical accounting background, as well as those attendees who possess an accounting foundation. The emphasis will be on providing attendees with practical knowledge that can be used immediately. Whether you are new to your agencys board or staff or have substantial experience in the nonprofit environment, this workshop will help enhance your ability to prepare and use financial information for better decision making.
Brad Johnson, a former chief financial officer and auditor of nonprofit organizations, will present in a seminar style format, which includes interaction with attendees. After the presentation, he will remain to respond to areas of interest of attendees.
At the beginning of the workshop, each attendee will have an opportunity to suggest an issue or question to be covered. In addition, among the topics to be discussed are:
Design and implementation of a meaningful system of internal controls Understanding IRS Form 990 and how to use it Creating meaningful reports for the board, funders and other third parties Budgeting, its preparation, role and use as a management tool The importance of the annual audit and the auditor relationship Brad Johnson recently retired. He spent much of his career as a certified public accountant (CPA) in public accounting and as a CFO in private industry and nonprofit organizations. He is a former infantry staff sergeant, having served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam. Brad earned a B.S. in economics and an M.S. in accounting from the University of Rhode Island. He is a published author and has presented at national conferences, and he is a volunteer with Executive Service Corps of the Triangle (ESC).
