Despite its dazzling cinematography and impressive performances, the film distorts the true history of a monarch whose life was stranger than fiction. A sixteenth-century Stewart with Tudor blood, the young queens reign was shaped by complex religious reformation, political intrigue, and of course, a heavy dose of scandal.
