Assessing Digestion and Selecting Herbs
When applied correctly, herbs can have radical effects on digestion. Using the four qualities (hot/ cold, damp/dry), I will be presenting methods for assessing tongue and bodily symptoms to determine what type of digestive imbalance is present, and what herbs might be most ideal for that type. Primarily, we will be discussing the difference between hot and cold digestion, but also damp and dry. We will cover indications for herbs such as peach leaf, rose petal, marshmallow root, shatavari root, rhubarb root, yellow dock root, triphala, magnolia bark, gentian root, oregon grape bark, angelica root and elecampane root.
This class is intended to provide tangible tools to use for your own digestive health, with friends and family, or in your clinical practice. I borrow from Traditional Western Herbalism, Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and my personal experiences and observations. We will not be discussing western diagnoses of digestive disorders, but rather taking things back to the basics of bodily tissues and their needs.
LEVEL: This class is appropriate for intermediate to advanced students. I recommend taking Intro to Herbalism with me at least, or having prior herbal studies before taking this class. Intro to Constitutions and Herbal Energetics is also a good class to take before this one.
