Music of Reality presents: Phenomena of Growth
Music of Reality presents a concert featuring the research of Irmgard Bischofberger of the MIT Fluids Lab. Irmgard will present her work on the growth patterns of fluids - the beautiful fractal and crystalline patterns that govern the behavior of liquids, and the larger implications of these formations throughout nature. Talks will be interwoven with projections and music for piano, saxophone, and electronics.

All attendees will get to participate in a miniature experiment/demonstration.

PERFORMERS: Sam Torres, saxophonist and loop artist, pianist Sophia Vastek, and electronic musician David Ibbett, with projections and visual representations of the work of Prof. Bischofberger.

MUSIC: "Stainless Staining" by Donnacha Dennehy, "The Currents" by Sarah Kirkland Snider, a set by Sam Torres for saxophone and live electronics, and the world premiere of "Phenomena of Growth" by David Ibbett.



BIOS


IRMGARD BISCHOFBERGER, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, received her BSc and MSc in 2006 and her PhD in 2011, all in physics, from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago in the research group of Sidney Nagel. She is the recipient of a Kadanoff-Rice Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago and a Swiss National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, as well as a Poster Prize Winner for the APS Gallery of Fluid Motion. Irmgard works in the area of fluid dynamics and soft matter physics, with a focus on formation of patterns from instabilities in fluid and technological systems. In her graduate work, she studied the phase behavior and solvation properties of thermosensitive polymers. As a postdoc working for Sidney Nagel at the University of Chicago, she discovered proportional growth  a new growth pattern that was not observed in physical systems, despite its common occurrence in biological systems. Irmgard is also an enthusiastic champion for science education.


SAM TORRES is a New York City/Baltimore based electroacoustic composer, saxophonist, and freelance audio engineer.

Sam's music has been performed at the Thalia Theater at Symphony Space, Spectrum, Peabody Institute, Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa.  As a saxophonist and woodwind doubler, Sam has performed at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Spectrum, the RISD Museum, SMOKE, The Shrine, and others with Stretto, ensembles from Manhattan School of Music, New York Youth Symphony, New York Jazz Academy, and others.

As an audio engineer, Sam has worked with new music ensembles Talea Ensemble, Yarn/Wire, Chartreuse, Columbia University Composers, composer Michael Harrison, the Uptown Phil, and sTem trio; as a technical assistant with violinist Todd Reynolds at the Jewish Museum, Talea Ensemble at the Dimenna Center, Wet Ink ensemble, and composers David Adamcyk and Zosha Di Castri at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies at Columbia University.

Tilted Arc, an electroacoustic duo with pianist Sophia Vastek; Stretto, Sam's modern jazz quartet; and Little Wing, an 11-piece indie chamber ensemble are among Sam's ongoing ensemble projects. A graduate of the Horace Mann School, Sam earned his Bachelors degree in jazz performance in May of 2016 from Manhattan School of Music, where he has studied composition with Reiko Fueting and Todd Reynolds, electronic sound arts with Sam Pluta and David Adamcyk, and jazz saxophone with Donny McCaslin, Rich Perry, and Steve Wilson. Sam is currently a Masters student and Graduate Assistant fellow at the Peabody Institute, John Hopkins University, where he studies computer music composition with Geoffrey Wright.
