The Tallahassee Civic Chorale presents Silent Night

In this age of terrorism, instant communication and hardening of ideological and religious positions, it seems almost quaint to imagine a cessation of hostilities in time of war taking place, even for only 24 hours. But that is exactly what happened one hundred years ago this Christmas, in the trenches of France and Belgium, amongst the English, Scottish, French and German soldiers. And it happened because they sang.
The Tallahassee Civic Chorale celebrates this unique moment in history with the concert "Silent Night." The concert will be presented on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in Turner Auditorium on the campus of Tallahassee Community College, at 444 Appleyard Drive. The concert will tell the story of the Christmas Truce of 1914 through the arrangements of the music of that time, and through the recollections of the soldiers through their correspondence, journal entries and newspaper articles. Dr. Leslie Heffner researched this event and discovered that many of the hymns and carols the soldiers spontaneously sang for one another are still popular today. Works in preparation for this concert include arrangements of O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree), Stille Nacht (Silent Night), O Holy Night, Psalm 23, and O Little Town of Bethlehem.
