The Cuban Cowboys
The Cuban Cowboys at Arena Theater February 27
Arena Theater presents a Blake More production, The Cuban Cowboys, on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 9:00 PM.
The Cuban Cowboys play a combination of indie rock and traditional Cuban music, calling themselves the "World's Greatest Cuban Surf Rock Band." The slogan matches the group's mixture of seriousness and profanity, humor and absurdity, and the seemingly mismatched musical genres of chugging and melodic indie-rock, surf guitar and traditional Cuban son and montuno. And lots of Spanglish.
Armed with mambo riffs, swooning surf guitar, and a killer live show, the band is steadily building a following across the US. Their debut album Cuban Candles (2007), went as high as 15 on CMJ's World chart and NPR named it among 2007 top 10 releases in California. Newsday said the album was destined to become a classic intersection between roots rock and Cuban Son. Their new album, The Devil's Dance (2009), was produced by four-time Grammy nominee Greg Landau (Maldita Vecindad, Susana Baca, Patato Valdes, et. al).
There is no other band that sounds quite like The Cuban Cowboys; their potent mixture of styles and attitudes that conventional wisdom insists have no place together defines The Cowboys for Jorge Navarro, bandleader and first generation Cuban-American. Academics could likely trace the Cuban Cowboys' music to any number of primary sources, but the band prefers to credit Gram Parsons and Fidel Castro. "I like to make you think and have fun, it's infectious," Jorge says.
The current lineup consists of:
- Jorge Navarro (Lead Vocals/Guitar)
- Camilo Landau (Lead Guitar). He began playing guitar at the age of
twelve and has performed or recorded  with Los Lobos, John Santos, Jesus Diaz, Stevie Wonder, and Carlos Santana among others.
- Ayla Davila (Bass). She grew up among a plethora of musical influences and has played and toured with artists including Bobi Cespedes, Los Mocosos, Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeo Band.
- Javier Navarrette (Congas, percussion). Specializing in Afro Caribbean rhythms, Javier has studied with masters such as Miguel "Ang" Daz and Jos Luis "Changuito" Quintana in Cuba, as well as with San Francisco Bay Area instructors John Santos, Michael Spiro and Jess Daz.
- David M. Flores (Drums). David is a drummer, percussionist and educator.
Tickets for the concert are $15.00. The show starts at 9:00 PM and doors open at 8:00 PM. The Arena Theater Bar and the snack stand will be open.
