The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass
Under conductor Dr. Paul Rardin of Temple University, the Deer Creek Chorale presents the Maryland premiere of Carol Barnett's "The World Beloved:  A Bluegrass Mass" featuring award-winning bluegrass musicians Monroe Crossing.

Fulfilling the DCC's dual mission of "singing locally, giving globally,"  this year's sponsored charity is Habitat for Humanity - Susquehanna Chapter, which benefits families in need of housing in Harford and Cecil Counties.

And, highlighting the DCC's commitment to intergenerational singing, participating vocal music ensembles from Fallston High School (Harford County), Rising Sun High School (Cecil County), and the York Honors Choir (York, PA) will share the stage with professional singers and musicians.

ABOUT MONROE CROSSING:  Named in honor of Bill Monroe, "The Father of Bluegrass Music," Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and heartfelt originals. Their airtight harmonies, razor sharp arrangements, and on-stage rapport make them audience favorites across the United States and Canada.

Based in Minnesota, the group plays an average of 125 shows a year at major venues and festivals, frequently for non-bluegrass audiences  and people often comment that they'd never really liked bluegrass music until they attended a Monroe Crossing concert!

Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds and tastes, combining for a very unique ensemble sound. Their paths crossed through the music of Bill Monroe so they like to say they had a "Monroe Crossing."

Among their many honors, Monroe Crossing was selected to showcase at the 2007 International Bluegrass Music Association Convention and they were inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in 2007. The only bluegrass band ever nominated as "Artist of the Year" by the Minnesota Music Academy (MMA), Monroe Crossing won the 2003 MMA "Bluegrass Album of the Year" award. The group also took home four awards  for Female Vocalist, Guitar, Mandolin and Banjo  at the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association's 25th Anniversary Awards Banquet.

ABOUT PAUL RARDIN:  Dr. Rardin joined the faculty of Temple University as director of choral activities in 2011. He conducts the Concert Choir, teaches graduate conducting, and oversees the six-choir program at Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance. He previously taught at the University of Michigan and Towson University, where his choirs appeared with the Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Baltimore Choral Arts Society. Under his direction the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club performed at the 2010 American Choral Directors Central Division Convention.

Rardin has served as a guest conductor for all-state choirs in twelve states, for divisional honor choirs for the ACDA and Music Educators National Conference, and for Manhattan Concert Productions at Lincoln Center. He has presented clinics for state, regional, and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association.

Rardin is a graduate of Williams College and the University of Michigan, where he received the M.M. in composition and the D.M.A. in conducting. He has studied conducting with Theodore Morrison, Jerry Blackstone, and Gustav Meier, and composition with Leslie Bassett, George Wilson, and Robert Suderburg. He has also participated in conducting master classes with Helmuth Rilling, Charles Bruffy, and Dale Warland. His arrangements of spirituals and folk songs are published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing, and his articles, many on the topic of contemporary music, have appeared in the ACDA publications Choral Journal, Troubadour, Resound, and Bel Canto.
