Mark Twain's American Wisdom Tour
How would Mark Twain view America's place in the world today? How would he respond to the apathy and cynicism felt by his modern countrymen? Twain, Samuel Clemens, will be addressing these and other topics as he enlightens and inspires sure-to-be packed houses up and down California.
He will begin his tour at the Nevada Theatre, Nevada City, California, February 24th, 2010. This will be a World Premiere featuring a Champagne Gala Celebration to christen his voyage that will take him far and wide. Wine and hors devours will be provided and are included in the price of admission(The champagne gala is only for the evening performance Wednesday February 24th). This is a must-attend event for those who contemplate the course of this nation.
The theme of the show is an answer to the question, what would Mark Twain think of America today? As some Americans and most of the world perceive America as nothing but a nation of materialistic consumers, Mark Twain would want to point out who we are and where we come from. He would not be without his pessimism and would certainly employ his sarcastic wit in expressing his thoughts in his own ironic way. He would be the first to point out the mistakes we have made and perhaps are still making, but he would also remind us that this country is made up of the best and the worst of the human race. That it is the best of us, and that which is in us, that will eventually rise to the top and serve the rest of the planet as an example of humanity's potential.
Mark Twain today would say, "We are not Pepsi, we are not about corporate greed. We are Frederick Douglas and Harriet Tubman. We are Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. We are D-Day and Gettysburg. We are the Great Experiment that will someday prove the World's potential."
Beneath the humor and laughter this program evokes, there will be a special message to those of all political persuasions. This show promises to make people think as well as laugh.
The first act will portray Twain as he looked while working for the Territorial Enterprise during the silver strike in Virginia City in the 1860s. He will be discussing his younger years in Hannibal, Missouri and on the Mississippi River. The second act will portray the older, iconic Twain as he discusses his views on American involvement in world politics. The show will conclude with a question and answer session.
Chris LeGate has been performing Mark Twain in the area the Since 1994. He has brought to life the wit and wisdom of America's favorite writer and humorist at various venues throughout Northern California.
Audiences can expect a variety of new material that will surely enlighten, entertain and inspire. This a complete re-working of LeGate's previous performances.ÂThis presentation has never been seen on this or any stage thus far.ÂMark Twain has hit the refresh button.
The historic Nevada Theatre is located at 401 Broad Street in downtown Nevada City.ÂBuilt in 1865, it has been the venue for such luminaries as Emma Nevada, Jack London, Lotta Crabtree, Edwin Booth and, most significantly, Mark Twain.
Admission for the Wednesday evening performance, February 24th, is $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at six with a complimentary wine, hors devours and champagne toast before the performance which starts at 7pm. There will also be a 2pm performance February 24th with tickets $13 in advance, and $15 dollars at the door. The 2pm performance does not include the Champagne gala and hors devours. We will also be offering student matinees February 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th. Please call for information about the student matinees.
