Coastal Singers and Anchor Bay Children's Choir May 22, 2010, 4 PM presented by Gualala Arts Local Eyes
Coastal Singers & Anchor Bay Children's Choir on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at the Gualala Arts Center.
The Coastal Singers and the Anchor Bay Children's Choir will appear together for the first time in a shared concert in the Coleman Theatre. Tickets are $15 advance, $5 more day of performance. Youth 7 to 17 free.
The Coastal Singers had their first concert as the Gualala Arts Chorus in the winter of 2007. The group gives two concerts a year. A winter concert in December and a spring concert in May. They rehearse on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in Point Arena and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. in Gualala. The Coastal Singers invite women and men of all vocal ranges to join and are not limited to any particular genre or repertoire.
In the short two years of their existence, they have programmed music from the Renaissance period and from the classical, jazz, Appalachian and Broadway traditions. For their 2009 Winter Concert on December 14, 2009, they will be performing music based on regional melodies and texts chosen from around the globe. The Anchor Bay Children's Choir has existed for 5ÂÂÂ years and began the semester with a dozen motivated children in its younger division, the Bay Choir. The Bay Choir accepts 4 to 8 year old children without audition. They will have nine rehearsals during the fall semester on Mondays at 3:45 p.m. The schedule and information for the choir can be found on their website: web.me.com/anchorbaychoir.
Sue Bohlin, the director, begins by introducing solfge (musical syllables in place of note names, i.e. Do, Re, Mi) and Curwen (hand signs symbolizing each solfge syllable), two time-tested techniques which train singers to sing "in tune." Sue is a professional musician who has worked with the Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir for 25 years.
The older division of the choir, The Anchor Choir, meets on Fridays at 4:00 p.m. Some of the young stars of the local theaters and Mendonoma Idol winners have had training with the Anchor Choir. A recent graduate of the choir, Gavin Malik, will star in the upcoming Gualala Arts Theatre production of Oliver.
This semester's group began with nine talented members between the ages of 8 and 13. The Anchor Choir delves into interesting literature for children's choir, both unison and part-singing.
