At the base of Seattle's vastly changing South Lake Union Waterfront construction is set to begin on the future home of The Allen Institute of Brain Science. This project consists of a seven story research facility with up to four levels of below grade parking. A variety of shoring systems will be utilized to support the four streets that surround the excavation. The deepest portion of the project consists of a design/build secant shoring wall intended to limit subsidence of the newly renovated Mercer Street corridor and SLU Transit line during the 43 ft mass excavation. Conventional shoring was designed by Coughlin Porter Lundeen and installed on the shallow portion of the project which consists of solider piles, tiebacks, and wood lagging. In order to address the shallow water table challenges for the conventional shoring, a dewatering plan of closely spaced deep wells to remove contaminated water prior to excavation was implemented. In addition, deep depressurization wells were installed around the perimeter of the project. To account for poor ground conditions in localized areas of the site, compaction grouting was used. This was intended to improve the site's liquefiable zones. Rigid inclusions were installed under the future footing columns to contend with poor static load bearing capacity.
Bio: John Kvinsland is a Vice President / Project Manager at Malcolm Drilling. He holds an AA degree from Central Washington University and Olympic College. John started his career in the foundation industry at DBM in 1992. He joined Malcolm in 1994 and worked his way up through the organization, earning a promotion to Project Manager in 2003 and recently to Vice President.
