J Pope and Funk Friday * Diggs Duke * Johnny Popcorn * Sidewalk Chalk at Tropicalia
Presenting music at the edge of soul and hip hop. Four acts from four cities meet in Washington, DC for this one-time only event. Prepare for a night of lively rhythms and intricate instrumentation.

J Pope and Funk Friday is a female fronted Soul Band that combines elements of Hip-Hop and Funk to create a sound all their own. J Pope & Funk Friday [JPFF] have been spreading their spiraling riffs, dirty grooves and poignant messages across the Baltimore indie scene since 2010.

Diggs Duke: Winding horn lines and electric guitar passages. Vocals used sparingly over a transition. Djembe played in a tug-of-war with a drum machine. This is the sound of Diggs Duke's music, which can be characterized as a fresh, yet familiar interpretation of the bond between Soul and Jazz music. Listen.

Johnny Popcorn is a band on a mission. Founded by Tone Whitfield and Hezekiah, Johnny Popcorn's music is a mix of rock, punk, funk, and a lot of Philly soul. Whitfield is a respected producer/bassist whom has worked with Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, and Zap Mama, and Estelle, while Hezekiah is a hip hop emcee/Producer with three full-length solo albums under his belt. Hezekiah has worked with an eclectic mix of artists such as Bilal, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots, Cody ChestnuTT, and more. The two formed a band as a way of expressing themselves outside of their respected genres.

Sidewalk Chalk: With the release of its sophomore album, Leaves, Sidewalk Chalk continues to lead the contemporary evolution of hip-hop, soul, and jazz. The band's roots are firmly planted in Chicago where all eight members bring their respective talents together to update a sound first heralded in the Native Tongues era but never so musically diverse. The group's unique arrangement allows them to incorporate numerous styles seamlessly: an MC and female vocalist; a trio of keys, bass, and drums; a horn section with trombone and trumpet; and a tap-dancer.
