The Christmas Cabin of Carnaween

Set in the days of the great famine, this poignant Irish tale about a tinker's child, who as a newborn babe, was left on a doorsill, when there were too many children for the caravan. The Hagerty family who take her in come to love her as one of their own, and give her the name Oona. She grows to be a fine young lass, but being a tinker's child, no one will marry her. She spends her days toiling for the Hagerty's and later in others homes, caring for their children, their sick and old ones, being passed from family to family in need, but always longing for a cabin of her own. When the great famine hits the hardest, she is an old woman, and no longer of any value to the Lynch family, whose charity is strained by their lack of food. They don't even have enough to feed their young ones. It's the night of Christmas eve and she decides to leave of her own accord. "You won't be needin' me any more." The Lynch's make no protest and she leaves their cabin and follows a stretch of road to a hill by the sea. It is here that she always dreamed of having a cabin of her own. She lays down her weary bones to rest a bit and closes her eyes as a light snow is falling. As she drifts off to sleep, the wee people come to her aid, and set to building her the cabin that she always dreamed of . To this day it is said that whenever the snow falls on a Christmas Eve, her cabin reappears and Oona Hagerty opens her door to those who have lost their way, or find themselves in need of shelter. Told with music, dance and just the right measure of Irish charm, this beautiful story is sure to warm even the hardest of hearts this holiday season.
