The Tragedy of Macbeth

Let Shakespearean scholar George Frisch guide you as we visit in depth a drama Shakespeare painted on historical canvas as his audience might have understood it - the Tragedy of Macbeth. We may not believe in witches, but the questions raised by the play are with us always: what is the price of ambition; what is the consequence of choice, and why is there the all too human possibility of seduction into evil?

The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play is about the destruction of a human soul; a play so ominous and foreboding that the actors who perform it will not even call it by name, and only refer to it as "that Scottish play". (With eyes wide open to the hideousness of his offense, a brave and morally aware man commits murder for gain. His victim is his guest, his benefactor, his kinsman, and his king.)

Rooted in Scottish history and Elizabethan superstitions, the play portrays Macbeth's temptation and fall from honor to soulless and barbaric isolation.

George Frisch is a retired securities lawyer and former associate professor of law with a lifelong interest in Shakespeare. He has taught about Hamlet and about how Shakespeare created and used imagery in his plays and sonnets.
