Why Do We Call White People Caucasians? -- Dick Miller

Most of us habitually think about race in terms of the colors white, black, red, brown, and yellow. Where did these notions come from, and why do they persist in the face of overwhelming genetic and demographic evidence that we all have ancestors of every hue?

Nell Irwin Painter, Professor of History Emerita at Princeton University, explores these questions in her beautifully written and provocative volume, A History of White People (2010)

In this two-session course we will read and discuss Painter's book. Your local independent bookseller can get you a copy; there are also Kindle and iBook editions, and there are inexpensive used copies available from online vendors. Please read chapters 1-15 before the first session. As you do so jot down page numbers of a few passages you'd like to share.

Dick Miller, a social historian by trade, and a frequent taker and giver of LLCC courses will be leading the discussion.
