The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, known to lawyers as the "Mother Court," is the oldest and most influential federal court in the country. James Zirin, a litigator who has tried many cases before some of its iconic judges, and Anthony Crowell, Dean and President of the New York Law School, discuss evolution of the US justice system and some of the most famous cases that went down in the Mother Court, including the trials of Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs, the government obscenity suits against James Joyce's Ulysses and the film Deep Throat and the U.S. government's decision to try the 9/11 terrorists before a military commission, even though it originally indicted Osama bin Laden in the Southern District of New York.

Zirin is the host and producer of the critically acclaimed television talk show, "Conversations in the Digital Age," which can be seen weekly throughout the New York metropolitan area. He is a leading litigator, having served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the Criminal Division under the legendary Robert M. Morgenthau.

Anthony W. Crowell is the current Dean and President of New York Law School. He started in May 2012 after serving for more than 10 years as Counselor to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He is also a Trustee of Brooklyn Public Library. Books will be sold at this event.
