In its celebratory 35th anniversary season, internationally renowned world music & dance ensemble Libana illuminates the creativity, vision and spirit of women worldwide. Riveting, transformational and soul stirring, Libana takes audiences on a musical journey reflecting the universal human experience uniting us all.
From ancient traditions to contemporary creations, from the political to the spiritual, Libana's global repertoire covers a vast musical spectrum expressed with stunning close a cappella vocals and an impressive palette of instruments. Interweaving music, dance and story from such divergent cultures as the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America and Europe, Libana's artistry inspires audiences with wonder at the beauty, breadth and wisdom of our world's cultural diversity and common humanity.
In 1979, a group of women sharing a passion for international music, dance, and women's issues formed the global music ensemble Libana. Inspired by Judy Chicago's groundbreaking exhibit "The Dinner Party," Libana took their name from a woman honored by the artista 10th century Moorish poet, philosopher, and musiciansymbolizing women's creativity, vision and spirit throughout time.
The six women of Libana share a profound dedication to their artistic mission. In many ways, the intentionality of Libana's own longterm creative community mirrors the experience of communities of women everywhere on Earth who share music, dance, celebration, life-cycle ritual, food, laughter, and spiritual practice to create deep moments of unity and transcendence in their collective life.
Libana's nine recordings and three songbooks have inspired the formation and the repertoires of songcircles and choruses of all ages around the globe, and their music and performances have kindled a sense of joy, strength, healing and empowerment in several generations of listeners.
From Maine to California, Wyoming to Florida, Ontario to Nova Scotiaand from Bulgaria to Greece to India to Morocco!Libana has traversed the globe for 35 years celebrating the world's women. Libana believes deeply in the power of song, the rhythm of the drum, and the spirit of dance to connect people across vast cultural difference. Creating a bridge of the heart, their commitment to the artistic expression of the global community has inspired dynamic cross-cultural understanding, profound healing, and widespread peacebuilding.

Founded in 1988, Amandla is a chorus based in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The name Amandla comes from the Zulu word for "power", and our power comes from singing! We celebrate the power of community. We sing for justice, freedom, and peacesongs new and old, some from around the world and others written right here. In performance, we wear sashes made of cloth from many lands to remind each other that we belong to a global family. Amandla sings to celebrate life and to articulate social concerns. We work to provide inspiration in the struggles for justice and peace, and choose songs and source material from around the world. We strive to support and promote human rights. Our goal is to enlighten, as well as to entertain.
The Amandla Chorus was founded by Eveline MacDougall in 1988 as a way to support the then-growing campaign to end apartheid in South Africa. Since then, the chorus has added songs from many lands and in many languages as a way to share the joy of singing in community and to take a stand for human rights.
The chorus travels to prisons, schools and universities, rallies, protests, concert halls, soup kitchens, and community centers to bring our songs to audiences of all ages and walks of life. Our songs have brought us into the presence of some of our most treasured heroes, including Nelson Mandela, Pete Seeger and Cesar Chavez. Yet some of our most moving experiences have been while singing in remote or dismal places like prisons and shelters.
Amandla offers songs that are both rousingly joyful and deeply meditative to honor the spectrum of experiences on our Earth. Songs celebrating our natural world, the many struggles for justice, rites of passage, and the strength of community are among Amandla's large repertoire.
