CHICAGO & HAVANA: DANCE UNITES TWO WORLDS
Jan Bartoszek, Artistic Director and Founder of Hedwig Dances Maray Gutiérrez, Hedwig Dances Artistic Associate and ensemble member (native of Cuba) Susana Pous, DanzAbierta resident choreographer Roell Schmidt, Director of Links Hall (co-presenter of Trade Winds/Aires de Cambio) Join Chicago-based Hedwig Dances and Havana-based DanzAbierta as they discuss cross-cultural collaboration in the field of dance. These two dance theater ensembles have participated in a two-year international cultural exchange initiative that has resulted in a new work entitled Trade Winds/Aires de Cambio (Air of Change) based upon the central theme of cyclical time in two different cultures. It will receive its world premiere at The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago October 9-11, 2014. In this panel discussion, the artists and choreographers examine the successes and difficulties of simultaneously choreographing one piece in two separate countries and how international collaboration draws our world closer through the medium of dance.
