CAATA Performance Showcase
The Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists (CAATA) proudly presents five excerpts of outstanding work by new and emerging Asian American theater and performance artists.

JapanAmerica Wonderwave captures two friends, one of Japanese heritage and one not, attempting to understand and process tragedy in our world today. Toying with theatrical presentation, the two performers create for an audience a first-person comedic/funerary collage, placing themselves inside and outside of tragic situations, delicately enacting images of natural disasters, heroically voyaging to a post-tsunami Japan, and wildly dancing to the music that they listen to in times of desperation. This piece is written and performed by Makoto Hirano with Team Sunshine Performance Corporation.

SLANT Unplugged is an acoustic musical performance by based on the stories of our fathers, mothers, uncles and aunts. Their stories of family and community have inspired songs and music with guitars, percussion and shakuhachi flute.

An intimate, powerful homage to his heritage, Viet Nguyen's "Reincarnation Soup" was presented at the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival and the Asian Pacific American Empowerment Conference in 2010, and will be reprised at this year's Orlando Fringe. This original solo show explores the Vietnamese and Vietnamese American experience through the eyes of eight different characters.

Mommy Queerest is a comedic, autobiographical, one-woman show written by Kat Evasco and John Caldon, performed by Kat Evasco, and directed by John Caldon. This new work chronicles the coming out process of a lesbian daughter and a closeted lesbian mother, illustrating how the reclaiming of their sexuality challenges and strengthens their relationship and sense of belonging.

Meena's Dream, created and performed by Anu Yadav, is an acclaimed performance about the last dreamer on earth  nine year-old Meena who wishes her mother had the medicine she cannot afford, while Hindu God Lord Krishna seeks Meena's help in his epic hour of need. Writer/performer Anu Yadav plays a multitude of characters, accompanied by a live original score of South Indian classical traditions, jazz, and indie folk.
