The human spirit has always celebrated love, and in Hinduism Bhakti or devotion remains a central tenet of its teachings. Hindu saints and poets have explored love's profound effects on the soul through the stories of the gods. Krishna, Love Re-Invented presents one of the major Hindu gods as the ultimate embodiment of love. Kalanidhi Dance artistic director Ramli Ibrahim's vision imagines Krishna, dark skinned with lotus-like eyes and adorned in peacock feathers, as he dances in ecstacy with his many admirers or gopikas. But it is in Radha's devotion to Krishna, her one true love, that the audience witnesses a love that is passionate, erotic, spiritual, and all-consuming.
Krishna, Love Re-Invented gives North American audiences a chance to witness the sinewy and rhythmic movements of Odissi, one of the major classical dance forms of India. Led by the legendary dancer and choreographer Ramli Ibrahim, Sutra Dance Theatre of Malaysia has earned a worldwide reputation for excellence and artistic vision.
Founded in 1991 by Anuradha Nehru, Kalanidhi Dance of Maryland is committed to the preservation and promotion of Kuchipudi, an Indian classical dance style that originated in Andhra Pradesh. Kalanidhi aims to raise the profile of Indian classical dance in the U.S. by presenting outstanding dance productions and training the next generation of Indian classical dancers to the highest standards.
