CORIOLANUS
Coriolanus runs September 18 - October 4 at Halifax Mall, where the NC NAACP held civil protests week after week during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Moral Monday protesters repeatedly gathered in large numbers on the grounds to protest a number of legislative efforts they saw as disproportionately benefiting corporations and the wealthy - and Shakespeare's play begins with citizens protesting because they believe the senate is hoarding corn and food supplies.
Though Shakespeare wrote the play over 400 years ago under a monarchy, many other themes still resonate with our modern republic as well. Questions arise about who among society is most fit to lead, how much voice citizens should have, and what role military plays in government leadership.
Managing Director G. Todd Buker (Let Them Be Heard, Two Noble Kinsmen) and the ensemble lead the audience through the play physically, covering a distance of about a half a mile from beginning to end. The audience will stand and walk for much of the play moving around the site from scene to scene, though there are occasional opportunities for some audience members to sit. This play is accessible by wheelchair.
Bare Theatre is a Raleigh-based mobile theatre company that has received acclaim from publications around the Triangle. Bare is known for its minimalist, high-energy, physical approach to the works of Shakespeare and historical texts.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ATTENDEES:
ARRIVAL Showtime is promptly at 7:30 each night. Latecomers will need to be escorted to where the show is taking place on the premises and will miss part of it. Please arrive early to give yourself time to find the location! SEE MAP BELOW
PARKING Audience members should park in the lot at 406 N Wilmington St, or along Polk St. in marked spaces just north of the parking lot. SEE MAP BELOW
BOX OFFICE - The "Lobby" & Box Office will be located in the courtyard across the street from the 406 N Wilmington St. parking lot. This courtyard is between the Revenue and Public Education buildings along N Wilmington St.
RESTROOMS The government buildings onsite are locked at night. Audience members will be able to use the facilities at Burning Coal Theatre at the Murphey School, located just 2 blocks east of Halifax Mall. We strongly recommend using restrooms before you arrive, or arrive BEFORE 7:15 pm in order to use the facilities at Burning Coal.
RUN-TIME/INTERMISSION The first "half" of the show runs 75 minutes and the second "half" runs 35 minutes, for a total run-time of 110 minutes. There will be one 15-minute intermission, during which time audiences may use the restrooms at Burning Coal Theatre, 2 blocks east of Halifax Mall.
THIS IS AN OUTDOOR SHOW Audience members should dress appropriately for weather. Temperatures are often moderate during this time of year, but nights can cool off quite a bit. If you tend to get cold, please bring a jacket, hat, gloves anything you need to be comfortable!
THIS SHOW INVOLVES WALKING AND STANDING Audience members should wear comfortable shoes to walk in high heels are not advisable! There are a few opportunities for audience members to sit on steps and ledges along the way, but attendees should be prepared to walk and stand for most of the performance. WHEELCHAIRS are permitted for audience members who need them, however best viewing of the first scene involves some stairs.
