Sinclair House Tour

Built in 1961, the Sinclair House is located in the Innis Arden neighborhood of Shoreline. The house's design combines elements of John Entenza's Case Study Program and the Asian influence common to mid-century Modern architecture in the Pacific Northwest. Two striking elements of the house are its open floor plan and expansive glass curtain walls that overlook a forested ravine.

Perhaps equally striking is how far the house has come in the last three years in the hands of the current caring owners. Over the years, the house had suffered from poor original construction details and a stint as a rental. Current owners Erich Volkstorf and Laura Brodax purchased the property in 2003 and immediately began an extensive renovation. Using the services of Michael Soldano, an architect who has designed many mid-century Modern residences in the Northwest, Volkstorf and Brodax rebuilt the home, while preserving the bones of the original structure. Their in-depth research helped to maintain the home's mid-century design integrity, both in specific detailing and significant elements that are common to the period.

The Sinclair House is a superb example of staying true to the Modernist vision while revitalizing a neglected gem. In its new incarnation, the home was featured in the May 21, 2006 issue of Pacific Northwest Magazine.
