When Larry Shue was a student in Japan he noticed something funny about peoplethey'll tolerate any sort of bizarreness from a stranger they think doesn't know their customs. So he wrote a "devilishly clever" script based on that premise, exploring what happens when a group of dubious characters is forced to deal with someone they erroneously think can't understand what they're saying.
