Fall Prevention and Fire Safety for Seniors, Followed by a Tour of the SLO Firehouse, Station #1 -- Joyce Pardue
While seniors make up about 12% of our population, they are twice as likely to be injured or killed by fire or by falling than the rest of the population are. One in three seniors will fall this year.
During this course, Joyce Pardue will present recommendations and suggestions for improving senior safety. We'll discuss things you can do yourself, and the help available from the Fire Department, including home safety, visits for testing smoke alarms and supplying new alarms and long life batteries. We'll also learn why and how to use the emergency number, 911, and what to expect when you make that call.
After the presentation, we'll be treated to a 'backstage' tour of the Firehouse.
Joyce Pardue is Public Education Coordinator for the San Luis Obispo city fire Department. She works for the Fire Marshall, Rodger Maggio, in the Fire Prevention group. Ms. Pardue has been a teacher and banker, and spend most of her career as an IT executive before she retired and moved to central CA. She joined the SLO Fire Department to manage the Senior Safety Program funded by a FEMA grant. Her project management, leadership, training and public speaking experience provided the background for her to lead this effort, and she has been mentored by the Fire Department leadership in the fire prevention material she presents.
