Summer Classics :Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest
Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest Directed by Anne Easter Smith First performed in 1895, this play's high farce and witty dialogue have helped make it Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The Importance of Being Earnest is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrief, maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the conventions of late Victorian society, the play's major theme is the triviality with which the culture treats anything that might be of personal value in favor of appearances.
