CARNIVAL, TROUT, & BLUE! Piano sextet concert ..

"Carnival, Trout and Blue" begins in the imaginative world of Camille Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals, where the ensemble transforms itself into a menagerie of lions, kangaroos, donkeys, and even a graceful swan. Written with tongue-in-cheek humor as entertainment for friends, this playful suite invites us to hear the animal kingdom come alive through music sometimes majestic, sometimes silly, always full of charm.

From Saint-Saëns whimsical zoo, we follow the current downstream to Franz Schuberts "Trout Quintet." Just as water ripples around rocks and sunlight dances on the surface, Schuberts music sparkles with warmth and energy. His famous song Die Forelle ("The Trout") swims through the fourth movement in a set of lively variations, each instrument taking its turn to play in the stream.

Our journey ends not in nature, but in the bustling cityscape of George Gershwins "Rhapsody in Blue," arranged for piano and string quintet. With its jazzy clarinet slide (ahem, viola in this case), glittering piano solos, and irresistible rhythmic drive, the piece captures the excitement of modern life in 1920s America. Its as if the playful animals of Saint-Saëns and the splashing trout of Schubert have leapt straight into the bright lights of the metropolis where classical tradition meets jazz and leaves us grinning from ear to ear.

Beni Shinohara, violin
Beni joined the San Francisco Opera Orchestra in 1988 and has been Assistant Principal Second Violin. She previously held the positions of Associate Concertmaster at the Houston Ballet Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. Born in Nagoya, Japan, Beni Shinohara earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees from the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts. She has been featured as a soloist with various orchestras, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Houston Ballet Orchestra, among others. Beni loves hiking, cooking, and making flower arrangements in her free time, and enjoys playing chamber music with her wonderful colleagues.

Paul Ehrlich, viola
Paul studied at Cambridge University and Yale, and served as Associate Principal Viola in the Phoenix (Arizona) Symphony before joining the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, where he was Principal Viola for 20 years. A frequent extra in the S F Opera and Symphony, he collaborates in chamber music as much as possible.

Victoria Ehrlich, cello, studied at Southern Methodist University, Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and Stony Brook University. Her teachers included Robert March, Bernard Greenhouse, and Robert Gardner. She played with the Santa Fe Opera and Chamber Music Festival, and the Opera Orchestra of New York, and was principal cellist with the Symphonies of Omaha, Richmond, VA, and Phoenix. Retired from the San Francisco Opera in 2023 after 39 years, Ms. Ehrlich has also performed with the San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Symphony, New Century Chamber Orchestra, Composers Inc., Berkeley Symphony, Lamplighters, and the Russian Chamber Orchestra. Still an active chamber musician, she performs regularly with the Cecilia Quartet, the Bridge Players (who specialize in music by Jewish and Holocaust composers), the African American Composers Initiative (who discover, commission and perform music by African American composers), Trio Solano, Sonic Harvest (new music by local composers), Las Chicas del Tango (milongas at The Dome in Oakland), and the Fath Chamber Players, a fixture in Mill Valley.

Karen Shinozaki Sor, violin
A familiar face in the San Francisco Bay Area music scene, Karen Shinozaki Sor performs with the New Century Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Rosa and Marin Symphonies, and as an extra musician in the San Francisco Ballet and Opera Orchestras. She is also a frequent chamber music collaborator, appearing with diverse groups including the Berkelium Quartet, Music at the Mission and the Sor Ensemble. A Bay Area native, she received her BA from UCB as a longtime student of Serban Rusu of Tiburon, then continued her studies as a Hertz Traveling Fellow at the Konservatorium fur Musik Bern, Switzerland, as a student of Professor Igor Ozim. Karen likes to relax with her cellist husband Eugene Sor, son Kenji, dog Jerry, and is addicted to NY Times puzzles.

Ken Miller, contrabass
Ken Miller is a San Francisco-based bassist who has enjoyed a career spanning many genres of music. He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Opera Orchestras for decades as well as with many other orchestras. Ken is also an accomplished jazz musician who has played with many leading players on the Bay Area scene both on acoustic and electric bass, including saxophonists Branford Marsalis, Pharoah Sanders, Gary Foster, and Charlie McCarthy: guitarists Bruce Forman, Mimi Fox, Jordan Samuels, Jeffrey Burr and Kai Lyons; pianists Marion McPartland, George Cables, Al Plank, Mark Levine, Larry Dunlap, and George Gaffney.

Amy Zanrosso, piano
Amys playing has been hailed as expressive, magnetic and masterful but since no one at the New York Times has said this, shes not allowed to put it in quotes. Thanks to her attentive Italian immigrant mom, piano lessons started at the age of 6 and by the age of 15, Amy had made the decision to make music her life. As a soloist, she has appeared with the Santa Rosa Symphony, Symphony of the Kootenays, the Russian Chamber Orchestra, Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, Symphony of the Redwoods and the Kensington Symphony Orchestra. Her love of chamber music has led her to more fully admire her favorite composers while sharing the experience with countless inspiring musicians and appreciative audiences. She is constantly fueled by her fantastically inspiring students and enjoys forcing her favorite composers on them as well as telling them what to do.
