Explore Inside Ledge Lighthouse
Let's tour inside Ledge Lighthouse!
We take a 15-minute boat ride from downtown New London to reach the lighthouse in the middle of the harbor. Explore the light for about one hour before returning home.
There are many varieties of lighthouse within sight of our harbor and the New London Maritime Society owns three of them! View nearby lighthouses on the ride out, then land at New London Ledge Light and explore inside all the way up to the top. The views from the lantern room are awesome.
Be aware, landing at Ledge Light demands a little physical dexterity. You don't have to be a Ninja, but you will have to balance on the edge of a boat and step up to reach the platform. Climbing the small stair into -- and down from -- the lantern room also is challenging. Please make your reservation at least one day in advance of the trip. Children must be age 7 or older.
Thanks to a grant from the New London Water Authority, tickets for New London residents are just $5, each. (Please bring a piece of mail with your name and New London address to the boat.)
Day-of trip instructions: -- BE CERTAIN TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL before leaving for this trip. Should we need to cancel, you will be notified by email at least three hours in advance of departure time. We also will post any cancellations on this announcement.
-- All visitors must wear appropriate foot ware: deck shoes or sneakers (no sandals or flip flops). You will not be allowed onboard without proper shoes.
-- Leave time to find a parking place. Please arrive at the pier 15 minutes early. Everyone must sign a waiver of liability before getting onto the boat.
-- We MEET on the City Pier behind the New London railroad station. This year we are using the Water Taxi boats for transportation; Thames River Heritage Park boats are not handicapped accessible.
-- All tours are weather dependent. Again: please be certain to check your email inbox prior to departing for the boat. We will notify you by email if the tour is canceled. The water taxi is a former navy utility boat open-air with no cabin and limited cover. The water temperature might make for a cool ride. It is recommended that passengers dress warmer than usual. Rain gear is recommended if the forecast calls for inclement or windy weather.
-- Food and drink, with the exception of water, are NOT permitted. For safety reasons, NO alcoholic beverages are permitted.
Payments are non-refundable unless there is a weather cancellation. More 2025 dates will be announced.
Ledge Light (1909), along with the New London Harbor Light (est. 1760, current tower 1801) and Race Rock Light Station (1878) at the opening of Long Island Sound to the Atlantic, create a pathway of beacons leading from the Atlantic to the historic port of New London. All three lights are now owned by the New London Maritime Society. Ledge Light is preserved with the help of the Ledge Light Foundation. Monies raised by these tours support restoration of our local lighthouses.
