2025 Short Course
The ASCE Seattle Section Geotechnical Group/ Seattle Geo-Institute Chapter is proud to announce our annual Short Course, which will be held on Friday,  May 16, 2025. The Short Course will be held on the 76th floor of the Columbia Tower. The short course emphasis will be on tools for slope stability

Post-fire debris flows are a hazard that has been dramatically increasing over the last 40 years, both in occurrence and in the research and tools available to predict and manage them.  In this short course we will start by reviewing the characteristics of these events in terms of initiation, transport and deposition.  Recent scientific tools will be presented that allow us to predicting the locations, triggering mechanisms, discharge rate, volume, speed, flow paths and inundated areas.  Next, mitigation methods and effectiveness will be reviewed, with examples from a variety of settings, so that participants will be able to design the optimal packages to reduce risks.  Finally, changes induced by wildfire will be discussed in detail, along with the effects of changing climate conditions.  At the end of this course, participants will have an intuitive understanding of debris flows, especially in post-fire situations, with technical tools and technical references for hazard management.

Course attendees will be eligible to receive 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEU) or 7 Professional Development Hours (PDH).
