MYTHS FROM UNCLE TOM'S GRANDSON
ANKHFYRE. IX | BLACK FUTURE MINISTRIES presents MYTHS FROM UNCLE TOM'S GRANDSON.
Join us for a unique and impactful evening that blends the power of art and activism. Myths From Uncle Tom's Grandson isn't your ordinary play. Comprised of two one-act plays, this double feature performance re-tells the tales of war and peace in the face of social unrest. - In the first act, set just after the war in Vietnam, Foster, a young veteran, returns home to Philadelphia, only to find that he no longer fits into the life he left behind. He struggles with migraines, nightmares, a secret drug addiction, shifting sense of purpose and a society eager to re-define its meaning of patriotism. Through interaction with his neighborhood and family, Foster slowly begins to come to accept his new reality. - The second act, set in present day, we follow Winter, a soldier recently home from the middle-east. She faces similar struggles but in a modern world shaped by social media, therapy culture and a widening gap between soldiers and civilians. As Winter battles PTSD, disconnection, and the pressure to 'get over it" from her lover, she falls deeper into her own mania. As both realities seem to collapse into one, the play ends by highlighting the universal struggles of soldiers returning home and the enduring power of resilience, support, and understanding. - Written & Directed by Joseph Xavier-Mack Show length: approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes with intermission.
