Title:
Bridging the Gap: The Critical Role of Geotechnical-Civil Collaboration in Risk Management

Presenter:
Andrew Fiske, State Geotechnical Engineer, WSDOT.

Abstract:
Successful infrastructure projects rely on seamless collaboration between civil and geotechnical engineers. However, decisions made in the design phase to meet a rigorous schedule, or save costs often involve inherent geotechnical risks that, if realized during construction, can lead to costly delays, safety concerns, and project overruns. This presentation will explore a real-world example where assumptions and compromises in geotechnical design had significant construction-phase consequences. By examining this case, we will highlight best practices for risk communication, the importance of early and continuous collaboration, and strategies to ensure that geotechnical uncertainties are properly accounted for in civil and structural design. Attendees will gain insights into how proactive coordination can improve project outcomes and reduce costly surprises in the field.

Biography:
Andrew Fiske has nearly 20 years of experience with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), where he currently serves as the State Geotechnical Engineer. His career spans coast-to-coast and encompasses expertise in civil design, construction oversight, and geotechnical engineering in both public and private sectors. Andrew champions the development of best practices within the geotechnical profession and is dedicated to mentoring and fostering the next generation of geo-professionals. He contributes to the advancement of the field as a member of the Soil Structures and Seismic subcommittees of the AASHTO Committee on Bridges and Structures and serves as a DOT representative on several national research projects. Additionally, Andrew is a member of the Community Advisory Board for the Civil Engineering program at the University of Washington Tacoma.
