How Older Patients Can Benefit From Personalized Medications -- Dr. John Headding
Join Dr. John Headding, a Central Coast compounding pharmacist and former hospital CEO, as he surveys promising developments in age-appropriate medications and delivery systems.
As we age our metabolisms change. Because every body ages differently, standardized doses of manufactured medicines often mis-medicate, triggering drug toxicities and adverse interactions. A better approach, especially for the elderly, may be to tailor medications to particular patient needs.
In years past pharmacists typically did more than repackage pills manufactured by others. They "compounded" medications to order. In our times individualized pharmacology is making a big come-back. Compounding pharmacists are again working closely with prescribing physicians to provide age-appropriate medications and delivery systems. A particularly promising avenue delivers precise, personalized dosages through the skin directly into the bloodstream. Because transdermal medications bypass the digestive system, they often markedly reduce drug toxicities as they increase drug effectiveness.
This two hour lecture and demonstration course will begin by evoking drugstores past with artifacts from Dr. Headding's extensive collection. During the second hour he will discuss current pharmaceutical trends and field questions.
John Headding, Pharm. D, has practiced clinical pharmacy for over 25 years. He holds advanced degrees in pharmacy and health care administration, and trained in pharmaceutical compounding at the University of Florida. He has worked in hospital and retail settings, specializing in chronic disease therapies, drug interactions, complex pain management, and personalized pharmaceutical medicine. He is the proprietor of Morro Bay Drug and Gift in Morro Bay.
