DUO SABU at Piedmont Center for the Arts!
DOORS OPEN AT 4, MUSIC STARTS AT 4:30 PM
Please join Duo SaBu for a tuneful and adventurous hour of song! Pianist Heidi Saario and tenor Erich Buchholz combine forces as Duo SaBu, presenting a concert of songs and piano works by Amy Beach, Marion Bauer, Elfrida Andree, and Agathe Backer-Grondahl; Finnish composers Oskar Merikanto, Yrjo Kilpinen, and Heino Kaski; and a couple of gems from the Golden Age of Broadway by Forrest and Wright. Youll hear songs in Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and English, with full texts and translations provided. You will enjoy this concert among the current display of art at the picturesque Piedmont Center for the Arts.
Erich, a native of Chicago, has studied Finnish language and repertoire since 2006. Heidi, a native of Helsinki, has performed and taught piano in Finland, Canada, and the USA. They met at a solo performance of Heidis in 2022, where she played Finnish piano music, and began working together soon after. The richness of Finnish song repertoire is deep, with its stark and expressive poetry, and music that breathes a new life into the poems with moods that are at times pastoral and folk-like, turning brooding, romantic, imbued with a profound connection to the natural world. In the songs you hear bird calls, the sea, winds, snow-capped mountains. These musical images amplify the emotions and complexity of human experience captured in the poetry of L. Onerva, Eino Leino, Hilja Haahti, J. H. Erkko, A. V. Koskimies, Severi Nyman, and the folk poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot. Heidi and Erich are passionate about bringing this exceptional repertoire to more audiences in the USA and abroad. Complete texts and translations are provided at each of their performances.
Tenor Erich Buchholz can be heard in the role of Fridolin on the Naxos label recording of "The Rose of Stambul" by Leo Fall. As a member of Hudson Shad, he has performed in "The Seven Deadly Sins" by Kurt Weill, in Louisville, Detroit, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Duesseldorf and Potsdam, with Ute Lemper and Storm Large. He sang Jacey Squires, tenor of the barbershop quartet in "The Music Man" at Cincinnati Pops. With Hudson Shad he has toured 17 of the United States and Japan. He is featured on Bob Applebaum's recording of his Jazz Shabbat Service. He recently sang on the Jarvis Conservatory's series "It's a Grand Night for Singing" in Napa.
Heidi Saario is a native of Finland and has played the piano since the age of 4. She has performed as a soloist and a collaborative pianist in Finland, Canada, and the USA. Heidi enjoys promoting Finnish and Scandinavian composers and bringing this repertoire to new audiences. Since moving to North America 20 years ago, she has had many opportunities to perform at various North American Finnish cultural festivals. Heidi has produced two recordings: "Jean Sibelius Compositions for Piano" and "Diamonds of the North Songs from Scandinavia" with soprano Cindy Koistinen. She holds a M.Mus in Performance and Pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, Canada. Aside from performance, Heidi maintains a busy teaching studio in Alameda.
