This panel is dedicated to deconstructing the idea that good design can make a jail humane. Our speakers will discuss the history of Rikers as a reformist project, critically examine the "justice hubs" model for the Borough-Based Jail project and its broader national implications, discuss the role of public art and the beautification of carceral buildings, and take a look locally at how city and state development projects for Chinatown beyond the jails are also shaped by policing.
Panelists: Tomie Arai - Public artist & Co-founder, Chinatown Art Brigade Mei Lum - Founder, The W.O.W. Project Mon Mohapatra - Abolitionist Researcher Jarrod Shanahan - Author, Captives: How Rikers Island Took New York City Hostage
