Sudanda was formed in 2004 by Alaaeldin Abdalla, a composer, singer and oud player from the Sudan now living in Vancouver. He writes music (based on traditional Sudanese forms) to the words of Sudanese poets. You can also hear the influence of Western folk music in his compositions - which makes the band name a very literal description of the sound they create. In 1991, Alaaeldin was forced to leave the Sudan to escape the violence, abuse of human rights and repression of artists of all kinds. In 2001 he emigrated to Canada as a refugee. Alaaeldin met and befriended Jane Kalmakoff at a language learning centre shortly after his arrival in Canada. She heard his music and encouraged him to meet local musician Earle Peach for collaboration. Getting them together took 2 years, but once they did Earle and Alaaeldin formed a strong musical connection and then asked Jane to join them in 2004. Sudanda has gone through a number of incarnations, with many additional players, but these three musicians are at the root of the music. The CD is dedicated to Alaaeldin's family, his brother, Abdal Munaem, who disappeared in 1996, to Yassir Bastawi and to musician and writer friends in and from the Sudan. The songs are generally upbeat and hopeful. About the meaning of the title song, Alaaeldin says, "Injustice, racism and human rights violations are now rampant in my country. The message of "Tomorrow's Dream" is for love and hope for these things to change". There are also love songs, songs of love for country that ask you not to lose hope, and songs about homesickness. Although putting music to poetry is common in Sudan, it is unusual by North American standards. Band members include Alaaeldin Abdalla on oud and vocals, Earle Peach on guitar, Jane Kalmakoff on accordion, James Griffiths on trumpet, Ken Tabata on bass and Gary Wildeman on drums.
At this CD release you'll hear two full sets of Sudanda's beautiful, richly melodic, uniquely rhythmic music.
