Food Justice: Local Food, Migrant Workers
Blackhurst Cultural Centre and Karma Food Coop present a thoughtful, in-depth discussion on the experiences of Seasonal Agricultural Workers, who are essential to food production in Ontario. Panelists include Gabriel Allahdua, author of Harvesting Freedom, Jenn Pfenning, President of the National Farmers Union, and Chris Ramsaroop, assistant professor at New College, University of Toronto.

Gabriel Allahdua worked as a migrant farm worker in Ontario, from 2012 to 2015, before leaving the program to seek permanent residency in Canada. Currently, he brings his knowledge of migrant farm workers issues and his experience as a community organizer to his role as the inaugural Activist-in-Residence at the University of Guelph

Jenn Pfenning is a family owner and the Director of Human Resources, Marketing and Operations at Pfennings Organic Farm in New Hamburg, Ontario. She has a depth of experience working alongside local and migrant workers to produce food that serves her passion for healthy living, food justice and strong community.

Chris Ramsaroop is an organizer with Justicia for Migrant Workers and on the executive of the Asian Canadian Labour Alliance and the board of the Food Chain Workers Alliance. He is also an instructor in the Caribbean studies program at the University of Toronto, and co-director of the migrant worker legal clinic at the University of Windsors faculty of law.

Facilitator Sunday Harrison, Karma Board member, will lead a lively and interactive discussion.
Light refreshments will be served.
