19th Century Knitting: The Brioche Stitch
Monroe County Museum
Monroe, MI
Compartir este evento

Historic fiber artist Donna Casaceli will conduct a 19th-century knitting workshop at the Monroe County Museum on Saturday, March 2, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Casaceli is Archivist for the Birmingham Museum (Birmingham, Michigan) and has over twenty-five years of experience in historic textiles. Specializing in the interpretation of historic needlework, Casaceli's workshop will highlight the brioche stitch, which enjoyed wide popularity among knitters in the 1850s, and then gradually fell out of popularity until recently. According to Casaceli, "The brioche stitch creates a fluffy, reversible piece, excellent for warm winter wear." The stitch was largely forgotten by the fiber arts community until very recently, but has gained a huge following due to its versatility and look" she continued.

This workshop is free and open to all intermediate or higher-level knitters on a first-come-first-served basis. Participants should be able to knit and purl, and have familiarity with basic knitting terms and techniques. As a bonus, Casaceli will also demonstrate another stitch found in an 1856 Gentlemans Comforter pattern.

Participants should bring a set of size US 5 knitting needles and a skein of worsted-weight wool.

Participants will receive several historical patterns and links for more online resources. Slots are limited, and registration is required. Please follow this link to reserve your slot.

This workshop is presented as a part of the Monroe County Museum Systems YesterWays program, a series of drop-in activities and events that focus on a skill or craft from times past, inspired by our Monroe County history. Beginner-friendly activities are held every Saturday at the County Museum. Each month, a different activity is offered, where participants receive one-on-one instruction from museum staff in a fun, beginner-friendly make-and-take project.

See our Facebook page for more information, and to stay up to date on all museum activities. The Monroe County Museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and as always, admission and activities are free and open to the public.
