The Washington Swine Information Day will be held on February 2, 2024 from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM at the Pillar Rock Grill (Moses Lake Golf & Country Club) in Moses Lake, Washington. Swine producers of all sizes; 4-H/FFA youth producers; agency representatives; agriculture educators; and fair/show representatives are invited to participate. The event has been organized and sponsored by Washington Pork Producers, National Pork Board Checkoff, and Washington State University Extension.
The theme for the day is Quality Pigs Produce Quality Pork. The morning session will start of with a WSU Animal Science Update from Dr. Gord Muchdoch, Chair and the Student Swine Students. Dr. Paul Kuber from WSU Extension will provide a detailed overview of how to select pork for make quality pork sausage; the presentation will be followed by a sampling of sausage tasting. New WSU Geneticist, Dr. Kim Davenport, will present on genetic selection tools and technology to improve pig health and quality. The morning session will conclude with an update from the National Pork Bard, before a pork featured lunch.
The afternoon session will be lead off by Dr. Shannon Neibergs, WSU Extension Livestock Economist, will provide an economic outlook for pork, protein and feed cost for the coming year. WSU Livestock and Meat Evaluation Team will discuss a new video resource available to adults and youth to learn live animal and carcass merit evaluation. Ms. Sarah Lemon, WSDA Local Meat Specialist, will discuss funding opportunities for Washington small/mid-size meat processors and meat buying guides. The day will conclude with a presentation by Washington State Dept. of Ag on steps they are taking to help prevent disease introduction in Washington and trainings they have done to be prepared and respond if a foreign animal disease should be identified.
Registration for the days event is $25 per person and includes seminar, handouts, lunch and break refreshments. An all-day youth registration, $15, is also available to 4-H and FFA members. Individuals may also attend just the afternoon session for $10. There is a $15 per person late charge for registrations postmarked after January 26, 2024. Please pre-register so we can ensure adequate accommodations and meals.
