COSMOS-UK: 10 years of the UK's national soil moisture monitoring network
This years significant hydrological anniversaries continue with a lunchtime webinar celebrating the first decade of the COsmic ray Soil Moisture Observing System UK.

COSMOS-UK is a national network of near real-time soil moisture monitoring sites deploying a cosmic ray neutron sensor (CRNS) to measure soil moisture over a circular area about 400 m in diameter (12 hectares).  The network is operated by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology with funding from the Natural Environment Research Council.

This webinar will look back on the science and some of the data applications enabled by 10 years of continuous soil moisture observations.  We are delighted to have presentations from members of UKCEHs COSMOS-UK team and from users of COSMOS-UK data and other CRNS networks.

Helen Houghton-Carr and Phil Vincent, both from UKCEH, will provide an overview of the COSMOS-UK network.  Helen is the project manager, and Phil leads the field team and manages technical aspects the network.

Magda Szczykulska (Research Associate, UKCEH), Amir Badiee (Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Energy, University of Lincoln), Yanchen Zheng (Research Associate in the School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol) and Patrick Stowell (Lecturer in Particle Physics, University of Sheffield) will provide CRNS case studies from the UK and around the world.

- Magda will present her modelling of future soil moisture across the UK using COSMOS-UK data.  - Amir will continue in the UK, focusing on his involvement in developing an autonomous COSMOS Rover for measuring soil moisture in farmland.
- Patrick will describe a project in Brazil which uses CRNS sensors to help optimise irrigation systems.
- Yanchen will talk about her evaluation of reanalysis soil moisture products using CRNS observations across the globe.

Jon Evans (UKCEH), overall lead scientist for COSMOS-UK, will wrap up the event by showing how to freely access COSMOS-UK data and looking forward to ongoing activities and future initiatives, such as progress towards development of a near real-time UK soil moisture map at 1km2 spatial resolution.

The meeting will be hosted by Victoria Coates, the BHS Secretary, and Helen Houghton-Carr from UKCEH.
