Three workshops with Alan Marriot

'Building instant character - subconscious noises, inner/outer tempos, tonal placement, and emotional gesture'.

Thursday 17/4 - 7-10pm

In this workshop Alan will work on building character traits through use of 'subconscious noises'. A character's personalities is closely connected to the vowels and noises it makes. Whether we realize it or not, we all have little sounds that we use to assert or re-enforce our personality. We will look at creating strong, motivated characters by playing with where your sound is placed in your mouth and body. We'll also dig deep into emotion, particularly defining the default emotional gesture that drives characters reactions and responses. Finally we will look at how different tempos influence character behavior. The aim is to develop character archetypes that can potentially be used again and again in different improvisation situations. One not to miss!

'Endowment, offers, declarations, and react and respond - offer and acceptance in impro'

Friday 18/4 - 2-5pm

This is a really good workshop for both beginners and more seasoned pros as it goes over some of the most necessary but often missed skills in impro. Good endowments and strong declarations are two of the best ways of getting scenes off to a good start and we will work them both in scenes, drills and games. We will look at the 'observe and endow' technique of starting scenes and show the connection between fear reduction and true offers and acceptance. We will also go over the core skill of 'react and respond' work in impro and the role the three ways of thinking (instinct, intuition, and intellect) play in creative work.

'Two person scene dynamics - the dance of status in scene work'

Friday 18/4 - 7-10pm,

This workshop takes status work into relationships. Using simple concepts like changing distance, space exclusion/domination, and vowel length, dynamics and status games in scene are given new depth. We will be looking at techniques such as 'the Mamet' game and 'Twilight Zone' and formats like Bassprov to give insights into deeper inner game work between players. You're not just playing a status you're playing a relationship. This work draws on some of the best ideas to come out of Vancouver's Improv Centre in the last three years.
