A Day with Beethoven and Stravinsky -- Sandy Eastman
Sandy Eastman will be providing LLCC members with yet another opportunity to attend his pre-concert class and the symphony dress rehearsal for the San Luis Obispo Symphony concert coming up in May.

The San Luis Obispo Symphony offers as a gift to the community free dress rehearsals of its concerts during the afternoon (1pm-3pm) preceding the evening of the performance.

Sandy will present a lecture about the composers and the performers involved in today's orchestra performance.  Then you will join Sandy and attend the San Luis Symphony for the dress rehearsal of Classics in the Cohan featuring two interesting pieces:

Ludwig van Beethoven (17701827)Concerto for Violin in D Major, op. 61 (1806)

Creating timeless pieces of music was Beethoven's gift to the world  and on this night Beethoven's only violin concerto will be performed on a  1722 Antonio Stradivarius known as the "ex-Cadiz".  The concerto's lush lyricism and defining vitality has since enchanted audiences all over the world, and it has become the most popular piece in violin literature.

Igor Stravinsky (18821971)Petrushka (1911)

Stravinsky's second ballet tells the story of a mischievous puppet named Petroushka, a character of Russian folk puppetry known at least since 17th century.  Stravinsky tells of the madcap adventures, death and ghostly return of Petroushka through lively solos by trumpets, woodwinds, and the strings.

The featured soloist is Avery Fisher career grant recipient violinist Jennifer Frautschi, who has gained acclaim as an adventurous performer with a wide-ranging repertoire. As the Chicago Tribune wrote, "the young violinist Jennifer Frautschi is molding a career with smart interpretations of both warhorses and rarities." Equally at home in the classic repertoire as well as twentieth and twenty-first century works, in the past few seasons alone she has performed the Britten Concerto, Poul Ruders' Concerto No. 1, Steven Mackey's Violin Sonata, and Mendelssohn's rarely played d minor Concerto, along with standards such as the Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Berg Concerti.

This course will be in two parts.  In the morning, there will be  a lecture about the composers and about the pieces that are to be played in the rehearsal.   In the afternoon, the class, as a group, attends the dress rehearsal of the performance.  At the dress rehearsal SLO Symphony conductor Mike Nowak will speak as he conducts, giving background information, musicology, and note s on harmony.  With Mike's broad knowledge and stage presence, the dress rehearsals are fairly comprehensive.

Saturday, May 3, 2014,  9:00 - 11:00 am. for course, followed by symphony dress rehearsal 1:00 - 3:30 pm.

The morning class will be at Ludwig Community Center,  Room A. 864 Santa Rosa St. in SLO.  The concert rehearsal will be in the Christopher Cohan Center in the PAC at Cal Poly.

Silsby Eastman (Sandy) grew up and spent his working life in the Los Angeles area before moving to Pismo Beach.  He has taught at Cuesta and Allan Hancock Colleges and has been playing bassoon, baritone saxophone, and bridge as often as possible.  After graduating from Occidental College and Indiana University, he studied conducting bassoon with Walter Ritchie and conducting with Lauris Jones and Richard Lert.  He served as a bandsman in the Air Force and taught in San Bernardino, La Canada, Paramount and Agoura Hills.  He is also a former member of the Long Beach Coterie Sinfonique, the Pasadena Community Orchestra and the Topanga Symphony.

Please purchase a separate ticket for each person so that we can have a record of all attendees.
