Good news! Mentoring reduces youth depression
This interactive training will engage you in identifying and understanding the risks youth face who participated in a recent large-scale study. In the study we found that over 22% of the youth came to their community-based mentoring programs with severe symptoms of depression, but after mentoring, the depressive symptoms decreased. The study also showed that mentors' expectations, needs for support, and the reasons matches closed were linked to youth risk. These results come from the recently published and only large-scale study of youth risk and mentoring.
The presenters will engage you in answering these questions: What do you think these results mean for mentoring practices? How can mentors recognize symptoms of depression? What made the difference in reducing symptoms of depression? What do the findings mean for new partnerships with the mental health community? Copies of the brief youth risk survey and The Role of Risk's Executive Summary study will be provided. For an early look at the summary, or to view the full report, visit http://www.mdrc.org/publication/role-risk.
