Coping With Moral Dilemmas -- Andy Greensfelder

Hospitals are theaters of life and death, and therefore theaters of moral choice.

Imagine this scenario: you are the administrator of a major hospital. You, your senior medical staff and your Board of Directors must decide which of ten proposed research trials the hospital should pursue, and which it shouldnt. Any one of the trials may save lives; any one of the trials may lead to death. You will rate the ethics and efficacy of ten stated research practices issues you might employ Are there any you wouldnt use? What are the priorities for using each alternative? If there are moral dilemmas, how will you resolve them?

This class plays out this scenario in a relaxed, enjoyable workshop setting. You will individually ponder and decide, then in small groups discuss and decide, then collectively compare notes on how everyone went about making difficult moral choices in different social settings.

This is the next class in an ongoing series exploring the process of moral choice. You are welcome if you have participated in a previous class, but please let your fellow class members find their way without benefit of your previously learned lessons.

The course fee includes the cost of a copyrighted handout purchased by the instructor that will help you though this ethical dilemma exercise.

Andy Greensfelder taught legal writing at Washington University School of Law from about 1967-1970. Attorney from 1967-2002. Have taught three previous LLCC courses. Special knowledge: I participated in these ethical exercises as a part of my law firm's retreat in about 1984.
