WINERIES and WINEMAKERS

Tony Dollar of Lobo Hills Wine Company
2011 Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon. (Mostly Red Mountain, 67% Lonesome Springs Ranch Syrah, 33% Blackwood Canyon Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon - some of Red Mountain's oldes vines). Big, bold and complex with lots of layers. Grapes for this wine grew less than 15 miles from each other. Aged in a combination of new French and American oak, which married well with the vintage's fruit. The wine opens with aromas of truffle, mint, prune, fig and cassis. Rich and full in the mouth, with flavors of cedar, strawberry, and blackberry. The wine lingers rather than finishes.

Larry Lindvig of Pleasant Hill Cellars
2011 Tannat (Sarah Lee Vineyards, California).  Tannat is most closely associated with the Midiron region at the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in SW France. This Tannat however was picked and crushed by Larry and Birgit in Santa Rosa California. It is a decidedly robust wine with pronounced aromas of smoke and plum, significant tannins, juicy flavors of plum and raspberries and a wonderful long finish.

Bill Grassie of William Grassie Wine Estates
2011 Courageux (73% Cab. Sauv., 25% Merlot, 2% Petite Verdot, Columbia Valley).  Vinified in classic Cabernet Sauvignon style, this wine is complex with flavors of black fruit and cassis with background floral hints.  Restrained oak imparts flavors of carmel, chocolate and vanilla, providing many reasons to love this wine.  Soft silky tannins, a smooth round mouth feel and flavor that does not fade, it is as welcome at a party as it is with dinner.

Jason Morin of Ancestry Cellars
2011 Le Frère (65% Cab. Sauv.; 32% Merlot; 3% Petite Verdot).  Jason tapped into several illustrious vineyards  Ambassador, Copeland, Dineen, Klipsun and Stillwater Creek  for this Bordeaux blend. He's developed a wine brimming with aromas and flavors of Montana huckleberry, blueberry, president plums and chocolate.

Allison and Nathan Engman of Ambassador Vineyards and Winery
2010 Estate Syrah (Red Mountain).  A deep dark reddish purple color. Beautiful and intense dried blueberry wrapped around mineral and graphite and finishing with hints of roasted coffee and just a touch of dried rosemary and creamy plum. Medium body with mid-palate softness and surprisingly pleasant tannins on the finish.  The grapes for the 2010 Estate Syrah were sourced from Red Mountain.

Kit Singh of Lauren Ashton Cellars
2011 Syrah (Syrah, Columbia Valley).  Purple in color and 14.5% ABV. Brooding aromas of dark fruits, coffee and grilled meats. Great texture and acidity. Cherries, boysenberry, espresso, game, bacon and olive brine on the palate. Supple, mouth coating tannins. The finish is impressive. Simply stunning right now but this wine should age gracefully for 5-7 years.

And the Whites:

John Bell of Willis Hall Winery provided the Salad White, a 2012 Viognier.

Mystery Wine (donated by AIWF Chapter Chair, Brian Steinmetz): A Mystery! The guest who comes closest to guessing this wine will win a bottle! A food friendly white or sparkling, balanced acidity.
