Space.City Lecture: Tony Fretton

The philosophy of Tony Fretton Architects is to create original and intelligent design that gives long-term satisfaction in use and cultural benefits to its surroundings. Commissions for the arts prevail; recently, Fretton is designed a new London residence for the sculptor Anish Kapoor, renovated the Stroud Valleys ArtSpace, Gloucestershire, and won a limited design competition for the master plan of the Fuglsang Cultural Centre in Denmark,.

Founded in 1982, the practice became known in 1992 with the completion of the Lisson Gallery, London. The success of this project led to projects for Sway Visual Arts Centre, Hampshire in 1996; Quay Arts, Newport, Isle of Wight, 1998; a low energy building for the storage and display of the Arts Council of England Collection of sculpture at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, 2003; a rural arts centre in Holton Lee, Poole, Dorset, specifically for artists with disabilities; culminating in the renovation of the Camden Arts Centre, which opened in January 2004.

As well as being the principal designer of all projects at Tony Fretton Architects, Tony is Professor of Architectural Design & Interiors at Technical University Delft, the Netherlands and was Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard, 2004-5. He is active in the discourse on design through lectures, seminars and writing.

Tony Frettons lecture, entitled Across Europe, will show work by his practice, including museums in Denmark and Norway, an embassy in Poland,and housing in the Netherlands and cultural buildings in the UK.
