Mothers Day Event: Gov. Pardee, National Park Creation and Watercolors of Early Parks
Mother's Day... another brunch or dinner? We are offering a super addition or even an alternative! Come to the Pardee Home Museum gardens, in full spring bloom, under our magnificent oak trees to learn about California history. Give Mom a boost in intellectual curiosity.

In 1903 John Muir invited President Theodore Roosevelt and Governor Pardee to join in a camping trip that was to initiate America's best idea, the birth of our National Parks. At their meeting, Muir spoke of environmental degradation caused by development and asked for another layer of protection such as a National Park system to improve land management. Muir convinced both Roosevelt and California Governor George Pardee (the person in the long coat in the photo), on that excursion, to create the state grant and make the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove part of Yosemite National Park.

Soon, Artist Gunnar Widforss was commissioned to paint the newly designated parks that would be protected. We will be shown copies of his art and a lecture concerning this chapter of history by Alan Peterson of the Museum of Northern Arizona has the worlds largest collection of Widforss paintings and archival material, Alan Peterson is the Museum's Curator and the foremost expert on this important artist, creating the Gunnar Widforss Catalogue of history. He will be at our event to answer any questions and share details of this special time in history.

A champagne reception with sweets & savories will follow under our mature oak trees and spring garden.

Please enter the Pardee Home Museum garden through the white gate on Castro Street between 11th & 12th Street.

Reserve your table or seat as soon as possible. The cost is $25 per person with all proceeds going to the Pardee Family Museum. Brown Paper Tickets or call Richelle Lieberman 510.381.1973
