Kahn Humanities Lecture: David Nasaw on Andrew Carnegie
Andrew Carnegie spent his first fifty years becoming the richest man in the United States, and then devoted his remaining three decades to giving away everything he had made. In his lifetime, he provided funding for almost 2,000 public libraries in the United States, nearly 700 in Great Britain and Ireland, and hundreds more in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and elsewhere. Nasaw will tell the story of how Carnegie amassed his fortune, why he felt obligated to give it away, and why he committed so much of his fortune to building public libraries, including several Brooklyn Public Library branches.
