ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

MANDO PLANET
Featuring
Jack Dwyer & Tim Connell,
Mad Professors of the Mandolin

Portland, Oregon-based mandolinists and Lewis and Clark College music professors Jack Dwyer and Tim Connell are celebrated modern masters of the mandolin, virtuoso players and highly energetic performers who delight audiences around the world with their well-honed arrangements and flights of solo and ensemble improvisation.

Their freshly-released debut album (Mando Planet, 2013) is an ode to acoustic folk music, rhythm, and the mandolin. Intimate, raw and energetic, the songs on this release simultaneously honor and push the boundaries of traditional music.

In Mando Planet's live shows, TIm's and Jack's two mandolins become one as they create a stunning soundscape of harmony and counterpoint.  Beneath it all though, is a steady unshakable groove that will have you stomping your feet all the way home.

Jack Dwyer
Jack Dwyer is a multi-instrumentalist (mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, fiddle), singer/songwriter, and teacher based in Portland, OR. He teaches on the adjunct music faculty of Lewis and Clark College, and appears at workshops around the Northwest. He performs with fellow mandolinist and Lewis and Clark adjunct Tim Connell. They have a new CD entitled, Mando Planet.

Jack also exercises his many talents in a dynamic one-man show that evokes the troubadour tradition captured by folklorists Allen Lomax, Harry Smith and others, and pays tribute to the solo endeavours of more recent artists like John Hartford and Tim O'Brien.

Tim Connell
A graduate of the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist with over twenty years professional performing experience, Tim Connell is a rising star in the acoustic music world, forging a unique and sophisticated new voice for the mandolin in his work with Mike Marshall's Ger Mandolin Orchestra and through his recordings and tours with noted jazz guitarist Eric Skye, mandolin duo "Mando Planet" and the Brazilian choro group Rio Con Brio.

His in-depth study of both Brazilian and Irish music, combined with his  earlier years as a professional bassist, pianist and arranger have led Tim to synthesize a personal style on the mandolin which is harmonically advanced, rhythmically diverse and brimming over with sparkling ornamentation and romantic intensity.

A Rave Review for Tim & Jack's Debut Album "Mando Planet"
"The mandolin has seen a burst of creativity and wonderful new ideas these past 5 - 10 years. It's like our little instrument is having it's own (not so quiet) Renaissance while the world spins out of control towards the next "app" and folks rush about trying to find solace.Let this quiet meek instrument show us a way, right?Tim and Jack have gathered their handsome talents, creative energy and wide musical tastes and honed all of that into a collection of clear and concise gems in these mando duets. Whether they are playing an Irish Jig, a Brazilian Choro or improvising freely on one of their original tunes, the music always has focus and authenticity, never pushing their instruments too far or trying to be bigger than life. Just letting the instruments speak for themselves through these fine musicians. Groove meets, melody, harmony and energy. What else is music?Thank you gentlemen for such a sweet addition to our (not so little) mandolin world."
- Mike Marshall
