Melodia Exploring the Melody of the Drum
Women's Drum Center is excited to once again host their annual benefit concert on Saturday, May 17th, 2014 at Sateren Auditorium from 7 to 9pm at Augsburg College 2211 Riverside Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55454.
This annual concert benefits the Women's Drum Center a non-profit 501(3) (c). The mission of the Women's Drum Center is to provide opportunities for women and girls to learn, teach, and play percussion together and to energize the community at large through our performing. The event will include a silent auction, which opens at 6:00 pm, and concert at 7:00 pm.
Melodia is a concert in celebration of the melodies that are found in drumming. Drums can be tuned with varied pitches. This concert seeks to emphasize that beauty and tone, and help the audience members identify the rich, deep qualities of the sound of the drum.
Drumheart's music director, Krissy Bergmark, states, "Oftentimes, the primary element with new drummers is rhythm. Sometimes, players and audience members alike miss the fact that drums CAN be tuned, and that the pitch of a drum is so vital to the beauty of the overall composition. We have set out to help the audience notice the drum's pitch and range, and to explore that in our own playing."
Drumheart ensemble members are the primary performers featured in this concert. Drumheart is the main performing ensemble for the Women's Drum Center. The concert also includes performances from members of the Women Who Groove class, and the WDC's emerging Taiko group - Taiko Flash Mob, as well as other teachers from the Women's Drum Center. Drumheart will play several classics from the group's repertoire, as well as several new pieces written just for Drumheart by Drumheart's own music director Krissy Bergmark, and another WDC teacher, Jenny Klukken.
Drumheart provides an opportunity for women to experience ensemble performance. We value the collective, cooperative nature of drumming and strive to bring the joy and spirit of rhythm to ourselves, to other women, and to our whole community.
